In Loving Memory of Shawn

This work exists because of Shawn.

Shawn was a lovable child whose life was shaped by a trauma that changed the course of his journey. Like many who struggle with substance use disorder, he was trying to quiet pain that few people could see.

As a boy, Shawn loved the outdoors. He loved being around people — of all ages — and he had a natural way of making others feel welcome. He was quick-witted, kindhearted, and generous with his time. Shawn was the kind of person who showed up when someone needed help, whether it was lending a hand with a project, sharing a laugh, or simply being present.

His warmth and personality earned him the nickname “The Mayor of Maple Avenue.” Everyone knew Shawn, and Shawn knew everyone.

But Shawn’s path also crossed with a system that too often fails families trying to help the people they love. What should have been a journey of healing became one marked by barriers, stigma, and missed opportunities for support. Like many families navigating substance use disorder, we were told to step back — told that helping was “enabling.”

Yet there is no other health condition where families are encouraged to stop loving, stop supporting, or stop showing up.

Shawn deserved better.

We lost Shawn at a time when hope was beginning to grow again. His loss left a space that can never be filled. But it also left a calling — a responsibility to speak for families who feel unheard and to create the support we once searched for.

This nonprofit was born from that promise.

In Shawn’s honor, we work to support families, advocate for compassion and understanding, and remind people that behind every struggle with substance use disorder is a human being worthy of care, dignity, and hope.

Shawn’s story is not only one of loss — it is also one of love, connection, and community.

And through this work, his spirit continues to reach people, just as he always did.

Why We Do This Work

Families affected by substance use disorder often feel isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn. Too often they encounter stigma, silence, or systems that are difficult to navigate during the moments they need support the most.

Our mission is to change that.

Through education, peer support, community outreach, and compassionate advocacy, we strive to create the kind of understanding and support that every family deserves. We stand beside those who are struggling, those working toward recovery, and those grieving the unimaginable loss of a loved one.

Every life we reach, every family we support, and every conversation that replaces stigma with compassion is part of honoring Shawn’s legacy.

Because no family should have to walk this path alone.

Shawn’s life continues to ripple outward — in every act of compassion, every family supported, and every life touched through this work.

Shawn’s Legacy

Shawn’s life continues to inspire the work we do every day. Through this organization, his memory lives on in the support, compassion, and advocacy extended to others facing the challenges of substance use disorder.

In Shawn’s honor, we strive to:

  • Support families navigating substance use disorder with understanding and lived experience
  • Provide compassionate peer support for those grieving the loss of a loved one to overdose
  • Offer resources and guidance for individuals seeking recovery
  • Reduce stigma through education and community awareness
  • Create spaces where people feel safe, heard, and supported

Shawn is forever 26 — forever the young man whose kindness, humor, and heart touched so many lives.

Today, his memory also lives on through the Circle of Hope at Tuckahoe Park — a peaceful place created for reflection, remembrance, and healing. It stands as a reminder that even in the face of loss, community, compassion, and hope can grow.

Each conversation, each act of kindness, and each life touched carries forward the spirit of the young man who believed in helping others and bringing people together.

The Mayor of Maple Avenue is still making a difference.
